I am learning lots about myself by learning more about ADHD. It is very interesting. One thing I recently learned was that I have used a common coping mechanism that works, but is not very healthy. Because of my wierd brain and its lack of whatever, I get bored easily, I have trouble with motivation and need stimulus to get going. Well, some people will use caffiene or even abuse drugs or do risky things, what I tend to do is procrastinate. Yup. I guess it is fairly common in the ADD world.

I wait till the last minute (usually ends up being past the last minute 🙂 ) and then rush through a project or assignment or a duty, etc., frantically trying to accomplish the impossible. What I am doing is actually scaring myself into action. The reward is a huge adrenaline rush and the satisfaction of knowing I accomplished (sort of) the impossible.

The draw backs are: my body crashing afterwards and hours or days spent recuperating, my family, children especially, end up feeling rushed and yelled at all the time and my sleep is effected if I end up staying up late in that frantic state.

Apperently its not a good idea to keep yourself in a constant state of flight or fight response to get things done. Your immune system and other systems shut down to increase energy for that fight/flight response, and your body is very tense and stressed. No wonder I don’t feel good a lot of the time!!!

So, I am trying to learn how to cope differently. Being aware of this side of myself is a good start, but making the changes necessary will take some time. Matt and I are looking into relaxation techniques and ways of slowing down when we get into those stressed out frantic modes. As for the stimulus question I am learning to use things like rewards to get things done, such as 15 minutes of reading a good book after 15 minutes of laundry duty. One suggestion I ran across talked about finding ways to play more, being creative at making the tasks fun. I’m still ruminating on that one. If anyone has any good ideas let me know! 🙂

Ahhh…. I am actually enjoying being home and doing housewifely things these past two weeks. Shocking isn’t it? For those who don”t know me that well, I usually can’t stand house work and feel bogged down and stressed out about it. I think I am finding some peace and see some light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. 🙂 It has been nice to relax after all the hustle and bustle of Christmas time craziness. I think the kids feel it too. It’s like we can all just take these huge breaths of fresh air and just breathe. A good way to start the new year, I think. God bless us, every one! Happy New Year!

My laundry machines are dying. Again. Laundry at the Bowman house has always been an adventure. We started with a washer but no dryer, I used a clothesline. Then I inheirited a used, barely alive, washer from a friend. At some point I remember making trips to the laundry mat frequently, you know with two babies in tow. Then we moved and were blessed with appliances that came with the house, nice! We moved again and inheirited my parents old washer and dryer that we used when I was in Jr. and Sr. High school. These held on for a while, but now the washer jumps and bumps around almost in a complete circle, pulling its cord and hose away from the wall. It rattles the floors and sounds like something is about to explode! I like adventures but a little more stability in my life right now would not hurt a thing. So… we are buying brand new appliances!

O my gosh, I can’t believe it! I am so excited! A front loading washer and a stackable dryer (heavy duty, large capacity of course) that eventually will be moved from my basement, which you have to access through a very narrow trapdoor like stairway in our bedroom (it’s a miracle I survived through three pregnancies without falling down or getting stuck 🙂 ) into an aclove off of our kitchen on the main floor. I will be able to do laundry without having to wonder where or what the kids are doing. I won’t have to wash loads more than one time because of forgetting to put the wet clothes into the dryer soon enough before they sour and stink! (This was especially a problem since my machines were in a wet moldy basement to begin with.) I will be motivated to keep up with the laundry since I won’t be able to hide the mountains in the basement any more. I will not have mountains in my kitchen! (Of course there is still my bedroom that has a door I can shut, but no, I must conquer the Beast!

Check. One more Bowman household project underway. Stay tuned till next time to hear another silly post with Larry, oh, I mean Amy… Ode to a back yard fence.

Yeah! We got rid of junk! Two small truck loads! Now if we can go through the cardboard boxes full of old school papers and stuff, and get the rest of our stuff ready for a yard sale. It is absolutely amazing to me how much junk accumulates and so quickly! Matt has definitely rubbed off on me, I can not stand all the useless mess that gathers around us!

I like making things look nice, I like things to be neat. I am not always very good at it though. I have to make a conscience decision to practice “less is better”. I come from a long line of knick nack collectors, who when they see something pretty they just have to have it and squeeze it in somewhere. Some “generational curses” are hard to break. 🙂
